Warren Buffett surprised many by selling a significant portion of his gigantic Apple stake, and his reason for the sale was even more surprising. Buffett, who trimmed Berkshire Hathaway's Apple holding by 13% in the first quarter after reaping enormous gains, suggested that the sale was for tax reasons. He implied the sale could be a means of avoiding an even higher tax bill down the road if tax rates rise to help plug a ballooning U.S. fiscal deficit. There's no special tax rate for capital gains in a corporation as they become part of the entity's income. Corporate income tax rate The corporate tax rate in the U.S. averaged 32.1% from 1909 to 2024, with a peak of 52.8% in the late 1960s, according to the Internal Revenue Service.

During Ben Johns' first year as a professional pickleball player, he could barely support himself financially. Now, he's making $2.5 million in pickleball salary alone this year, he tells CNBC Make It — plus more in endorsement deals and sponsorship contracts. CNN —As one of the lead negotiators for students protesting inside the grounds of Columbia University, Mahmoud Khalil said his primary objective was to get the university to sever all financial ties with Israel. Khalil said Columbia never put anything in writing, instead making offers verbally. But without a firm promise, Columbia’s offer didn’t go far enough for Khalil and other protesters, since the university had previously rejected divestment proposals. Khalil said they then presented Columbia with another offer: Rather than dump Israel-tied investments, Columbia could instead divest from weapons manufacturing companies and any companies complicit in violating international law. Toyo Suisan has consistently outperformed Nissin Foods in North America, one of the most profitable and fastest-growing markets in the world. It generally starts with shareholder proposals that by regulation can only address specific issues, such as capital allocation and dividends. Last year, 3% of corporate governance shareholder proposals were passed and 4% of balance sheet-based shareholder proposals were passed. First, it shows the opportunities available to activists in Japan where reasonable shareholder proposals could lead to significant shareholder value creation. Banks help fund the vast majority of renewable energy projects through tax equity investments, which allow the banks to benefit from federal tax credits for renewable energy. Currently, renewable energy draws $18 billion to $20 billion annually through tax equity investments, according to the American Council on Renewable Energy. "Many people joke that we're on the 'solar-coaster,'" Torres said about the ups and downs of renewable energy. The higher capital requirements for renewable energy projects in Basel III puts the regulation on a collision course with the Biden administration's push for cleaner and greener energy sources. "The clean energy industry's experience with tax equity investments does not warrant such a radical change," the group's letter read.

They built the wooden cart with bicycle tires and a kickstand in her parents' basement in 2016, maxing out her credit card's $1,500 limit to afford materials, and called it The Nitro Cart. That summer, they took it to any event that would take them, from sheep shearing events to farmers markets across Rhode Island, serving small batches of nitrogen-infused cold brew. To survive the winter, they partnered with local restaurants to install their nitro cold brew on tap. Here's how they built The Nitro Bar, from 80-hour workweeks to some TikTok virality and a lot of luck. They both worked "insane hours, usually seven days a week" to turn their cart into The Nitro Bar, says Finocchiaro.

Now, private equity firms are swooping in to help while taking majority stakes in exchange. Last week, the company announced that it would partner with California-based private equity firm Nexus Capital Management and move its test into a for-profit company. A company owned by private equity can obfuscate what the company actually does to the public and potentially to regulators. Private equity firms “come into industries that are already suffering from a lack of funding,” said Creeks. They’ve had a lack of funding and support and so sometimes private equity is the only viable option.

Jamie Dimon, one of the world’s most influential business leaders, is worried. The PE boom: The shrinking public market has private equity to blame — funds that pool money from investors to acquire or invest in companies. When a PE fund buys a public company, it takes that company private. The number of private companies in the US backed by PE firms has grown from 1,900 to 11,200 over the last two decades, according to JPMorgan data. Since that ownership change in 2018, involving a hospital chain known as LifePoint Health, care at the health system has declined, three patients say. In recent years, private-equity firms have taken over broad swaths of the nation's economy, extending well beyond health care. The analysis, called the Private Equity State Risk Index, details private equity's involvement in those arenas in all 50 states. The index shows "the private equity threats in our own backyard and gives state leaders the tools to protect the people they serve," said Chris Noble, policy director at Private Equity Stakeholder Project. "By providing transparent data on the risks associated with private equity investments, we empower communities, working families, and policymakers to advocate for change and protect their states from the threats posed by unchecked private equity firms."

Gooch-Peters pointed to Visa — which has a 60% operating profit margin — as a more sustainable investment opportunity. This creates a strong competitive moat and helps to sustain the company's high profit margins over time. Gerry Fowler, chief European equity strategist at UBS, echoed the sentiment about the importance of a company's competitive moat while picking stocks. The UBS strategist pointed to the attempts of Apple, then the world's biggest company, to break into the payments network sector. The UBS strategist also cautioned that impenetrable moats might sometimes pose a downside risk to investors.

Of all the ways the baby boomer wealth transfer is expected to reshape everything from housing to the stock market, it could have another big impact: making women a lot wealthier. According to Ellevest, which focuses on wealth management and financial planning for women, a lot of it is going to be inherited by women in a shift the firm is calling the "feminization of wealth." For one, as women live longer than men, there's a shuffling of wealth from boomer husbands to their wives. In total, about $84 trillion is expected to be passed down to younger generations in the Great Wealth Transfer by 2045. As women control more wealth, those corners of the economy will adapt to their needs.
